Family Vacation: Part I

Here it is: our Oregon vacation in photos. Well, at least the first half!

We started off the trip with an overnight stay in Bellevue, WA. We drove through Seattle on the way (with a looooong pit stop at REI headquarters, Matt's personal paradise!). As we drove through Seattle we excitedly pointed out the Space Needle each time it came into view. "Do you see it? Over there? That tall, skinny tower with the round thing on top? Do you see it?" Because kids are remarkably awful at following a pointed finger, we weren't convinced that he actually saw it. But after a while, Liam piped up from the backseat "Why do you always want me to see the Space Needle?" So we toned down the tour guide bit a notch and headed for the hotel.

In hindsight, it might be a bit self-defeating to priceline a great deal on a 4 star hotel the night before you embark on a tent camping expedition. Hauling duffel bags up to your room is decidedly uncool, but so is that next night sleeping on the ground. But the novelty of a fancy hotel room will never wear off for me, and the kids shared my excitement. I'm not sure Sarah's shoes were off yet, and she had crawled into the comfy bed!

Is it mandatory to eat breakfast at Denny's at least once when on vacation in the USA? I think it might be. So after a super healthy grease-bomb to start the day, we made a stop at Pike Place Market in Seattle. It was a gorgeous day, and apparently we were not the only ones with this idea. Despite the crowds, we took in a pie eating contest (if it weren't for the aforementioned grease bomb, I may have participated in this myself!) and Liam almost caught a flying fish in the face. We bought some fruit and it was time to hit the road.

That boat behind Mr. Cool is the Norweigan Pearl - the same ship that Matt and I sailed the Caribbean on a few months before Liam arrived.
He, obviously, couldn't care less.

Sarah colouring a pig. Of course.

Note to self: we need to up the ante on kids entertainment for future road trips. The old Wheels On The Bus standby will no longer suffice. The drive between Seattle and Fort Stevens was Painful. We picked up a bag of gummy lifesavers at one of our (many) gas station pit stops and Matt came up with a game: if Liam or Sarah can spot a purple or pink car (their favorite colours, respectively) then they get a candy. Now, purple and pink cars are not all that common. After all, who wants a couple of sugar hyped kids in the backseat? So their attention was held for about 90 seconds and when they had yet to spot a purple or pink car the tantrums began. Good times, good times.

Our first night in the tent, the kids were wired. It may have been from the moonlit game of chase we had on the beach in front of the Peter Iredale shipwreck. Maybe. Okay, that was a big pre-bedtime mistake, and we ought to know better. But when we got back to the campsite we (Matt and I), were exhausted and cold, and crawled into our sleeping bags at the same time as the kids....some time around 9:30pm. And they just wouldn't sleep. Around 11pm all was quiet and still and I was sure Sarah had finally slid into dreamland when she sat straight up and announced: "Me like cookies. And nanas {bananas}.......And Coke." She laid back down. Then up again: "Bunny like fries." Anyone familiar with this book? That's pretty much what was on my mind.

So there we were in Fort Stevens, near Astoria. The weather was not fabulous, especially in the mornings, so we needed to find non-beach activities to tucker those little rascals out. We figured a 164-step climb up the Astoria Column ought to do it.
But first, you've got to stretch. Very important. :)

We were reasonably sure we'd be carrying at least Sarah up a good portion of the column. But they both kept a very quick and steady pace and marched their little selves the whole way up in no time!

Once that famous Oregon Mist took a break, it was time to ensure they would really sleep that night. So off to the beach, at last!

So. Did they sleep? NO! Another night of endless chit chat in the tent before they finally dozed off.
The next day we drove up to Longview, WA for something completely different: horseback riding on the beach! Matt would be quick to remind you of the first time we went horseback riding together in Oregon back in '04. They offered us helmets. And if you're going to offer a self-professed Nervous Nelly like myself a helmet, I'm going to assume it's necessary. So I convinced Matt that this was mandatory equipment for the ride, thereby completely ruining anything romantic about a horseback ride on the beach. At least, that's Matt's opinion. I'm pretty sure he still holds this against me. He brings it up a lot.
This time I had something to prove. Not only did we not wear helmets (okay, maybe they weren't even available) but I put my babies up on the backs of tall, skittish (old, lazy) animals. And I did not freak out. Much.

No helmets to ruin the romance this time. Just ugly hats. And maybe the kids. :)

Twenty Minutes

We are back from vacation and with that comes piles of laundry, lots of re-organizing, and (I hope) a new routine in our afternoons. I call it "Twenty Minutes." Inspired by the kids being at each other's throats like caged animals while we tried to create some happy road trip memories, I am now aiming for the kids to spend just 20 minutes each afternoon playing, reading or resting in their own rooms. By themselves. Without them fighting or demanding a snack/butt wipe/craft, etc from me. 20 Minutes for Sanity. For all of us. We're in the middle of our first "Twenty Minutes" right now. And to be honest, it's not going terribly well. They were shocked at the suggestion of playing *gasp* upstairs and *egad* all on their lonesome. Liam has poked out of his room only three times, but hollers whenever he hears Sarah outside her door. And Sarah is pretty much pacing the upstairs hallway, ears focused on the stove timer, which will signal the end of her exile. So we'll see how long that lasts.
In the meantime, this blog has been a little short on pics of late! There are a lot of vacation photos to come, but in the meantime I thought I'd give myself and the washer/dryer a break and instead share a few snaps of the kids doing a "performance" in the backyard this afternoon. (Note: Potty Training, Round 14 resumed this morning, hence the lack of clothes for Sarah. She's had a pretty good success rate today. Fingers are crossed......)
Liam recited a modified version of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" while Sarah was cast as a flower.

She grew tired of being an extra, and decided to be "Mommy"instead.

Doesn't look good for Baby....

Whoops.....

It was reminiscent of a Shakespearian Tragedy, really. They must be brilliant. :)

Just Beach-y

This has got to be the coldest, wettest, dreariest spring/summer ever, so when the sun does pop out we've been taking full advantage. On a couple of occasions this has meant scooping Grandma up and heading for the beach! These pics were taken a few weeks ago, but are a good idea of what every trip to the beach is with these kids: silly, goofy, run/shake/build/dance-your-pants-off good times!

I think they have sand in their butts....

And another kind of butt (more common around here!):

Big Kid Class

I registered the kids in a couple of separate programs this summer to keep them from destroying one other make the most of the sunny days and get us out of the house early.* Liam has a two hour play group twice a week and Sarah did her first ever SOLO program! I wasn't sure how she was going to handle being left behind for an hour by herself. She's always the one that comes along with me when Liam is at school, or on the rare occasions that we are not together, then Liam is at her side. But she was pretty excited to go to "Big Kid Class". She led the way to the classroom, took off her backpack, blew me a kiss and said "Bye Mom!" while I lingered around outside the door waiting for her to have a change of heart. She didn't. Liam and I returned an hour later and she happily showed us the craft she made, gave me a hug and put her backpack on again. Easy as that.
My Big Girl....

* Early means the programs start at 9:30 and we are within easy walking distance from our house. We ended up driving 2 out of 3 days this week and were STILL late. Today we finally got our act together!

A New Tradition: The Birthday Interview

I decided to do Liam's first birthday interview over dinner tonight, since our day is pretty busy tomorrow. He wasn't willing to let that detail slide....

Mom: Liam, how old are you today?
Liam: Three.
Mom: Ok. How old will you be tomorrow?
Liam: Four.

Mom: What is your favorite colour?
Liam: Purple.

Mom: What is your favorite food?
Liam: Pancakes.

Mom: What is your favorite toy?
Liam: My laptop. (Mom's note: his favorite toy is actually his collection of garbage/recycling trucks. The toy laptop is what he was playing with 2 minutes before our little interview, and therefore got priority billing!)

Mom: What is your favorite thing to do?
Liam: Play basketball. (Mom's note: ?????? News to me.)

Mom: Who is your best friend?
Liam: Colin.

Mom: What school do you go to?
Liam: Friendly Forest

Mom: What is your favorite activity at school?
Liam: Building.
Mom: What do you build?
Liam: With wood and hammers and screws. I hammer the screws into the wood. No. Playing in the sandbox at school. With toys. You know what toys I use? Shovels. And I dig dig dig dig dig dig dig. Right down into the pipes! And I put water in the pipes and I make little sailboats out of paper to put in the pipes and float to the bottom.

Mom: Who was your teacher this year?
Liam: Teacher Lindsay.
Mom: Any others?
Liam: Yeah. Teacher Carol.
Mom: And?
Liam: Ruth.

Mom: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Liam: Uhhhhhh.......Fireman. And a garbage man.
Mom: Why?
Liam: 'Cause I just like those two things.

Mom: What was your favorite present you got this year?
Liam: The lock. (Mom's note: a lock/key that came along with a gift of swimming lessons. He is obsessed with locking everything in the house. Or he was, until he lost the key. I'm sure it will turn up eventually.....)

Mom: If you had a lot of money, what would you do with it?
Liam: Buy stuff with it.
Mom: What kind of stuff?
Liam: Another garbage truck. That's gonna be a lot of garbage trucks!

Mom: What is your favorite book?
Liam: The caterpillar one. (Mom's note: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle)

Mom: What is something you like about Mom?
Liam: Well...I like about Mom.....that she cooks noodles....that she cooks cookies in the oven for us so we don't burn ourselves. And then, you know what my favorite thing to do is? EAT! The cookies.

Mom: What is something you like about Dad:
Liam: [silly snorts and laughter]
Mom: No, really.....
Liam: [more snorts].....He builds things. Like tree houses!

Mom: What is something you like about Sarah:
Liam: Playing with her. Playing catch with the little birdie and racket.

Mom: What is your favorite TV show:
Liam: The skunk.
Mom: You've never seen that one. (Mom's note: we saw a skunk the other day and I told him about the skunk who thinks he's very handsome. He's never seen the show.)
Liam: Yes I have. I have when I was born. What's the skunk's name?
Mom: Pepe Le Pew.
Liam: P...Pep....Peppy...Yeah. That's a hard name to say!

I used a list of questions I found on the internet, and that was where it ended. He really enjoyed the process and watching me jot down his words, although I'm not sure I got the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth in his answers! I wish I had asked him what he liked about himself, but didn't think of it at the time. I'll ask him in the morning over his birthday pancakes! My baby is turning FOUR!

School's Out For Summer!

Today was Liam's first official "Last Day of School" and the class celebrated with a family picnic. Too bad it rained like it was November instead of June!

Some end-of-year highlights:
* Liam's teachers telling me how chatty he is in class. He was pretty shy at the beginning of the year and he's come a long way. He talks quietly but he has a lot to say, and is often the first to pipe up and answer questions in the group.

* The teachers presented each of the kids with a photo album with pictures of them from throughout the year. Liam sat down and thoughtfully flipped through each page. I was watching from the sidelines with the other parents and noticed him smiling to himself at a few of the photos.
* Sarah feels right at home at the preschool and with the teachers. She sat down beside Liam at circle time and participated in the songs, keeping up with the actions to "Mr Sun" just like all the other kids. When we left she shouted "Bye, Teacher Ruth!" and gave all the teachers a big hug. She still has another year before she gets to attend preschool for real, but when she does she is going to rule the school!
